Helping people cross the gap

Do countdown traffic lights really help? Many people are arguing with this issue. Actually, a research result from Taiwan’s Ministry of Transportation shows that it is more dangerous when you pass an intersection with a countdown traffic light installed.

According to the research, 187 intersections with timers installed saw a doubling number of reported car accidents with a 33% increase in the number of injuries. In my opinion, the reason for an increase amount of accidents is because drivers are used to look at the countdown numbers too. However, the countdown clocks are strictly for pedestrians. Drivers pass the intersection with a much higher speed if they see that they have only a few seconds left, consequently causing unnecessary accidents.

From above reason I would like to design a traffic countdown clock that is only visible to pedestrians, not the drivers.

As we all know, human eyesight is 20/20. We can see five minutes of arc from 20 feet away. If I could use an equation to calculate the best size of the clock numbers, I can easily design a countdown clock within the speed limit and times left.
